If you want to make denim Grocery Bags here are my two tips for choosing the denim to use:
Tip #1: Choose 100% cotton fabric.
Stretch denim is a little stretchy for these bags and it's plastic. Anything with the word stretch, elastic, poly/polyester, or Spandex contain plastic. There are lots of reasons to make your own bags, but one big one for many people is to avoid the plastic bags. Yes, it's impossible to avoid plastic these days and you can drive yourself mad trying. But you can compromise for your fabric stash might be to use stretch fabrics (and fleece) sparingly/strategically and the Grocery Bags are not the project for them.
Love this one! I'm partial to flecks and denim and this looks just so, so nice to me.
Tip #2: Look for 8 - 12 ounce fabric (10 ounces is my personal favorite).
Denim and other utility fabrics are often labeled by weight. Online shops sometimes list the weight, but often they don't. If the weight isn't listed, another indicator is it's labeled as mid-weight or medium weight for 8-10 ounce denim, or heavy weight for the 12oz. But these labels are subjective and sometimes people are flat out guessing at the weight because that's all they've got (though you can technically calculate it using a small piece, a scale and an equation). Unless it's some fantastic deal that's worth taking a chance on, I usually just stick to buying denim described as 10 ounces per square yard so I have a pretty good idea what I'm getting.
This looks to be very nice denim in about an 8 ounce weight. It ships from Germany which probably makes it a good option for EU/UK shoppers.
