Another patchwork bag is done! This one is similar to this one in that they are the same base fabric, both were made using the Grocery Bag pattern (this is the medium), and the basic idea is pretty much the same. The main difference is these patches are flat and the other ones have folded back edges.
Here is what one side of the bag looks like before trimming the edges and sewing it to the other side:
These patches are backed with interfacing, trimmed to somewhat of a square or rectangle, and then stitched to this lightweight denim using a zigzag (length: 3.5) for the outer edges and then a straight stitch (length: 2.6) as the back up stitching inside the zigzag.
My machine does have an overcast stitch that is pretty much the same as combining these two, but it is slow to sew with it and it's just faster to use a zigzag and then the straight stitch.
Despite two rows of stitching, these patches are going to fray. I washed this bag to see how much fraying we are talking about and was pleased to find it wasn't a whole lot. But this bag will need a haircut at some point in the future.
