This pretty cotton lawn called Petal is from Robert Kaufman's London Calling 9 collection and I'm excited to have it in my stash. So far I've made some hair ties with it and they turned out lovely:
These hair ties are strips of 1.5" wide fabric folded into 4ths. I make them in various lengths for covering hair elastics--shorter ones for a half ponytail, medium ones for a ponytail, and longer ones to wrap around a messy bun. I like the way they look in my hair and it's nice to be able to use some of my pretty lawns to make pretty things. The hair ties also let me tie up my hair a little tighter if the elastic is too loose.
Folding and pressing a 1.5" wide piece of this fine fabric is challenge! But I like the skinny 3/8" width and with some practice while making masks, I've found a way to make it happen while minimizing the steam burns to my fingers.
What works for me is to press the strip of fabric in half, leave it sit for a while so the center crease gets firmly set in place, and then come back later and press the edges to the center.
The trick is to pin the quarter fold being pressed to the center to the ironing board with one of these long pins from Dritz. These are glass head pins so the head won't melt if the iron gets too close. They are also very beautiful with the light shining through their ethereal glass heads.
P.S. If you have this fabric, or plan to get it, this thread is a great match.
