You might have noticed that "follow me on pinterest" button in the right column, and now here on this post. A bunch of you are already set-up there, but if you aren't using it, or aren't quite sure what it is, let me tell you a little about pinterest...
First, I know most of us don't need another site to visit/update/waste time on, but pinterest is REALLY easy to use and a great organizational tool.
The basic idea is you set up different boards where you can pin things and use them for reference later.
So maybe you plan to make a quilt and want to use fabrics from a variety of fabric collections. You could pin the fabrics you like to a board and take a look at them all in one place. Then you would have a visual reference, the names of the fabrics, and a link to where you can find the fabric later.
Besides being great for organizing, pinterest has a social aspect in that you can follow other people to see what they are pinning. Each pin also has a comment section and people seem to be adding more comments lately.
When you go to the main page, if you are logged in you will see pins from people you are following. Or you can click "everything" at the top of the page and see what all pinterest members are pinning.
Collaborative boards can also be created and then anyone can add something to the board. This could be really useful if you are looking for advice from other people, or are working on a group project.
You can create an account using your twitter or facebook login, or create a separate login just for pinterest.
Once your account is created, you download the "pin it" button that goes on your bookmark bar. Then when you are on a page and want to pin something, highlight some text to use as the description and then click your "pin it" button. Make sure you are on a permalink so it has the correct url.
The pin it window will open and display the image. If there are multiple images on a page you will see them all. Just highlight the one you want and a small "pin this" will appear on the image.
The text you highlighted will show up in the description box. Then select the board from the drop down box and "pin it".
It is SO EASY and there is so much great stuff to look at on other boards.
You can read about the pin etiquette here. Basically, it shouldn't be used for blatant self-promotion, be kind to others, and link/attribute the original source.
Happy pinning!
